Installing NVidia drivers on RedHat 9.0
Hey people out there,
Yesterday I downloaded RedHat 9.0, did a standard desktop install, sound, internet and the like is working. Now I want to install my videocard properly. Its a GF 4 TI 4400, so now its being controlled by the nv driver. After installing the latest NVidia linux driver ( IA32, version 5553 or something ) and so editing my XFree86 file from nv to nvidia . So far so good, now i go back from init 3 to init 5 and tada in X my screen is now in standby, only happens when i use nvidia as driver. So looks like the driver is corrupt. But i heard someone with mandrake 10 using it fine. So its just me and my redhat, anyone has any idea ? Cant quickly find anything in the readme. Thanks in advance, UnknownFear |
Problem number 2. Posted the message above from windows XP, ( dual boot ) so i tried to get into redhat, LILO comes up, I select redhat, tada black screen, and even when I log in as root and do telinit 3. I did something stupid yesterday apparantly, changed the driver from nv to nvidia, and changed my init back to 5 in inittab. How to fix this with something else than a reinstall ?
Thanks in advancce again |

Hi,
It'll be hard to have it back. If you've got a knoppix (or Mepis), you can start it, mount the right partition in read/write, change the init back to what it was before. You can return to other explanation about installing Nvidia drivers, I suppose you missed something but I'm no speciallist RH. Good luck, Marc A |
Ok fixed the Redhat boot problem with GRUB ( added linux 3 in ctrl + a ). Wasn't able to get it fixed and mate was running Mandrake 10.0 with no problems. So I got that today, installed, and walking against the SAME problem. All nice and neat, but I want it working so badly :(. Need the dual monitor and GL support.

so the nvidia installer script completed without errors?
did you check the log at /var/log/ did you comment out the XF86Config lines indicated in the readme? -- "Load DRI" and "Load GLcore" ( - from memory, double check those...) |
Yes I double checked the Nvidia readme ( which is pointless cause these boards even give correct answers :P ). All I had to do to fix it was change my iiyama S700JT1 monitor to a custom monitor with same specs, otherwise it wouldnt auto detect. So its all working nice and dandy now :)
