installing my printer
 

Hello all,

I'm just starting out with Linux and trying to figure out how to install my printer. Appreciate the help.

would be nice to give more details. For example where is your printer located (in the kitchen or in the bathroom?) Do you have cats?

(what kind of linux and printer you have, how are they connected, what have you tried...). Usually it should work without any magic and spell...

I have set up a network printer (HP Photosmart C7283 All-In-One) for 3 machines in a Windows environment. I want to install it to my Debian Laptop, also through the same 8 port switch. When I open a Word file to print from the Debian machine, the printer does not appear.

Is there a command line command I need to enter? I thought it would be plug and play, but obviously not. I have downloaded the Linux version of the HP printer S/W but as a new Linux user, I am not even able to find and access that printer S/W (let alone install it).

As far as I remember hp has an install package for linux. In Windows you can check the ip of your printer (or on the router). You need to run the installer and enter some info (like that ip). http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

The best way to install HP printers is with their own software, which should be installed already

Use the command "sudo hp-setup" in a terminal.

To start the GUI tool (if it's installed) from the command line, use the command hp-toolbox. It includes an install printer option.

If it's not installed, you should be able to find it in the repos.

It not unusual for the primary HPLIP package and the HP GUI to be in two separate packages.

I have an HP printer. I have found it's easiest to give networked printers a static IP address; it can make it easier to install it to be able to be able to enter the ip address into the setup tool.
