Installing mate on cinnamon mint 13

sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate
I used the above to install mate on mint 13. My problem is when I start my computer I am not given the option to run mate,it loads cinnamon by default. Is there a desktop manager I have to download as well? I have goggled this but no answer has jumped out and said this is what you do now.

Wouldn't you have to install the whole desktop environment to have a full alternate to Cinnamon?

If you are set for a password-less boot-up, yes, you need to enable the display manager (that is, require a password login). The display manager includes a button for choosing your desktop environment.

Ok found login(don't usually use a password login) selected mate, desktop still loads cinnamon. I did get the following error message from update manager today, not sure if related

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Ran in terminal and got
arryl@darryl-OptiPlex-GX520 ~ $ sudo dpkg configure -a
[sudo] password for darryl:
dpkg: error: need an action option

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages[*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;

Options marked[*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more'
So what am I suppose to do now?
