Hello all.
As probably everyone that posts in this area starts off with the usual "im new to Linux".. I would like to add "im new to Alphaservers too".
I have read quite a bit on how the alpha server works, and also on installing Linux. I downloaded mandrake 8.0 and actually had it running on a P3. So I went ahead and downloaded 9.2 ALPHA for the alphaserver,Created the CD using Roxio and upgraded the firm to 5.70.
I type the command boot DKA400 in SRM, the system reboots and brings me to "aboot".
At the aboot prompt I type "l" and I see 3 options. Reading these it appears that I have 3 options for booting. One is from CD, network or HD.
Im thinking at this point I should select the CD. Once I select it, I jump to what appears to be an installation screen asking where the installation media is, I select CD ROM. Next Is what kind of CD ROM so I selected SCSI.
The CD initializes and installation begins. About 1/4 way through the second stage ramdisk install everything freezes.
With all that said, my question is, how brutal was my attempt to install Linux (flames welcome) and if anyone would have a suggestion as to what I could change to perhaps succeed in installing.
For information the system is a Digital 1000A 5/333
I have 3 HD. 2 4.1GIG and 1 2.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
