Question Installing Mandrake 9.0

Times

Hi,
I have a P-4 computer. I'm running Win Me (which I DON'T like) and want to install mandrake 9.0. I have tried to install but nothing happens. I have a 40 gig Hard drive and 512 MB memory, so I have plenty of power and space to have both O.S. on at same time. Someone please guide me through the install process!
Thanks! Ken

PS I also, have Partition magic 7.0 in case I need to have a seperate partiton made.

I do believe that Mandy 9 does NOT come with win4lin or whatever it was that would let you install to a folder on a win partition.

So anyway, yes you will want to make at least 1 partition to install mandrake on, from there mandrake will do what it needs to for that unparititoned/unused space.

When you say "I have tried to install, but nothing happens" what do you mean?

Cool

Assuming that your windows partition uses the entire drive you will need to resize it. You can use PM to do this. Depending on what you want to install you will need at least 5-6gig of free space.

Once thats done boot the install CD. The install program canl create partitions for linux.

Personal preference on bootloaders, both work good. Just use the default and you can install it to the mbr.

Thanks all! Dutch, thanks for the tip regarding my CD-Rom being the boot drive!! That was the solution to my problem of not being able to install! Ok, here's another question-now that I have the O.S. pretty much installed (I'm to the point where Linus wants to configure my internet access), how do I get my netzero ISP installed and running? Forgive my ignorance regarding Linus but I have been a Windows user for years and a lot of this is new to me! Any help would be great!!

When you get to the point in the installation for configuring internet access, make sure your modem/whatever is recognised and then enter the name, phone number etc for your ISP. If you're stuck you can continue the installation without configuring the connection at this point, and configure through Control Centre later on, at your leisure.

modem/ISP

Hi all, 1/21/03
I loaded Mandrake 9.0 onto my back up computer. I have a Motorola 56K modem (PCI) that I want to configure. The drivers are all windows based thus my computer won't accept the drivers from the CD. I also have Netzero as my ISP (setup software is on a floppy disk)and want to install the software. I need advice as I'm a newbie to the Linux OS. Thanks much!

Ken H.
