Installing Mandrake 8.2

I've just tried installing Mandrake 8.2 from installation CD's that I got from Spidertools.

Everything goes fine until it gets to Configure x and then I get the message "An error occurred XFree86- rpm not found"

Is this a problem with the CD or what?

I'm trying to install on a Dell Latitude CS Laptop. Pentium 2 400 Mhz 128 Mb RAM and 18 Gb hard disk.

Anybody any ideas before I go back to Bill?

sounds like a problem with the cd. i would suggest downloading or getting a hold of an official cd to install. installation cd's out of magazines or sources like Spidertools aren't usually really reliable most of the time.

The RPM may actaully be on the CD, but didn't get copied/installed to your hard drive. That's the first place I'd check rather than waiting to get a new distro. You can always do:

rpm -ivh <package.name.rpm>

Once you find it and then run whatever X configuration tool they provide. Check their docs -- probably on the CD or their site.

even rpm file itself is fine,
it 's not properly installed sometimes..

i'd try reinstall the rpms ..

Thanks, Spidertools are sending me replacement CD's and if that doesn't work I'll try downloading from the Mandrake site (or is Red Hat better?)

Thanks, looks like I'd better do some reading so I have at least a basic understanding of what I'm doing!

same error here...

I'm having the exact same problem, also using a laptop (Sony Vaio, PIII).

I did a search and found the some xfree files on the install disk number three, which interestingly was not asked for during the installation.
