installing linux with xp
i've tried install the linux with the following three distributions: Mandrake, slackware, and Red Hat(newest versions). The entire installation went perfectly except i didn't create a boot disk. After selecting linux from my boot loader(grub), the computer runs a screen that goes through many different check of the system...they all passed. Then the screen just goes blank and freezes. This happens with every distribution that i've tried so far. Could someone please tell me what i did wrong?
thanks in advance. :newbie: |
No error messages etc?
|
does a login screen show up at all, or does it just turn black right after the checks?

post your /boot/grub/grub.conf
if you need to access your linux partitions from windows, use the explore2fs tool from http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm and copy tell use the partitions it shows i think that grub may not be loading the correct root partition |
there weren't any error messages
|
and it turns black right after the checks
i also couldn't find the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. I think i installed the boot loader in the MBR |
the bootloader still needs a conf file from which to read however....
check all your partitions; if you are using grub to select your OS, then the grub.conf file will be in one partition in the grub folder |
