Installing Linux Through USB?
 

I have latest Ubuntu 8.10 ISO and I have 1 GB Pen Drive too.
I am in attempt to install ubuntu on my new machine through USB Drive.

Few Imp Steps I followed:
1. Formatted Pen Drive with FAT32
2. Installed 7 Zip on Windows Desktop
3. Downloaded Syslinux-7.1.1 and renamed it to syslinux
4. Through Window Command Prompt cd Desktop\syslinux\win32
5.Ran the command : syslinux -ma G:
6.Extracted Ubuntu ISO to ubuntu-8.10/ folder
7.Dragged all files to empty Pen Drive
8.Moved everything from isolinux folder to root of Drive (G:)
9.Removed USB and put it on Machine to do installation

I can get everything on the usb drive, but when i try to boot from it, i hit F12 and choose USB and it says it cannot find the boot kernel linux. What do i do?
The Post Recommend at few lines downside to provide /casper/vmlinuz but that too dint help.

May I suggest trying unetbootin out? It should be easier to use, if nothing else, so you don't need to struggle if you don't specifically want to.

This might give some more hints if you're interested in the syslinux approach; it's not Ubuntu-specific, but then again, it's probably not important.

Thats really the easiest answer. If you download the ISO before hand, unetbootin will do everything for you in setting up your thumb drive, in about 1min.

I use it all the time and highly recommend it.

also, you can try to download iso and burn it. then you boot from it, install liveusb creator (i believe that it is already installed, but not entirely sure) and use it to install liveusb system on spare partition. if your BIOS supports it, you can now boot from your USB stick.

as far as i tried, windows syslinux didn't work. you can try it if you wish, but i would recommend not wasting time on it. i tested this method only on windows, so it may work on linux.

It seems like it isn't always there. Package is usb-creator.
