installing linux on unformatted hard drive with no operating system

I downloaded Mandrake Linux 10.0 and burned it to three CDs. Is there a specific way that the file folders should be burned? Furthermore, is it possible to install Linux on a new hard drive that is not formatted and therefore does not have an operating system yet? If so, how? Replies by email would be helpful too.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

May I direct your attention to
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/
to answer your questions about the burning of ISOs?

Most certainly :)
Insert CD, boot off it, follow instructions.

Cheers,
Tink

Sure it is you can either partition the drive first and format the partitions or just let the Mandrake installer take care of it during the install it will offer you the choice to partition and then format the partitions with the file system of your choice (I would recommend either ext3 or reiserfs for the non swap partitions). You will most likely want to create three partitions one for /swap depending on the ram in the machine 256-512 mb, a /root probably about 5 or 6 gb and save the rest for a /home all this of course assuming the drive is large enough for it.

No, you must have windows installed in order to be able to install linux.
Dude, what do you think? Why shouldn't it be possible?

Insert the cd 1 into your drive, boot from cd, install.
