installing linux on an external drive
 

I have installed Dedian on my laptop along with windows. However, I would like to unistall Dedian to free up some space on my hard drive an install it on an external hard drive. How can I unistall debian, knowing that if i unistall the boot loader, i will not be able to boot on windows and how can i install linux on an external hard drive. will i be able to boot linux from that external drive?

With an external drive, you'll have to create a custom initrd image to allow the USB system to stabilize before booting the kernel. I've personally never been able to get it to work, but your mileage may vary.

If your bios supports usb booting it will be easier. Otherwise you will have to do as matir said. Don't uninstall the bootloader, set it up so the kernel and initrd are loaded from the windows partition.

What are you freeing up space for--applications or files? If you're freeing up space for files, have you considered keeping the dual-boot and just keeping your files on your external hard drive to share between both OSes?

Just thought of another solution. The /usr folder usually takes the most space, so move that to the usb hd. It is not required for booting so you don't have to mess with the bootloader, just shrink your linux partition.
