In that case, get a newer distro. Redhat 9 is very old, and Redhat ceased support for it in mid 2004. The direct successor to Redhat 9 is Fedora Core 5 - I suggest that you get this.
FC5 has better hardware support, more and better applications, easier to use, better package management, etc.
As for the harddrive, by IDE I take it you mean you connect a parallel cable to it. Just being pedantic, but IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics, so both types of hardrive are IDE. PATA is the new term for what used to be called IDE, and SATA is SATA.
