Installing linux from the web

Hi,

My laptop with RH9 on it just crashed and messed things up real badly (linux boots with loads of error-messages and X and most applications wont run). Since I did not really like some of RH9's perculiarities, I choose to see things on the bright side and think of this as a nice opportunity to try out some other distro(s). But, and this is my question, I was wondering how easy it is to install a distro using the web.
I only have a USB floppy drive, which can't be used to boot the laptop. I can boot by CDROM (have a RH9 bootable cdrom and some live distros), but I would really like to try to install debian or slackware or so over the net.
How does one go about such an enterprise? Is it possible at all? Do I first partition the harddisk (for instance using the RH9 cdrom)? Is there a well-documented comprehensive (i'm a relative newbie) support page for this?

Any suggestions are welcome.
cheers,
rick

You can do a net install of Debian fairly easy. You first need to download the 21Mb Debian install iso and burn it to CD. Then boot from it. I am almost positive the default is net install, however it has been a while. Any Debian guru's like to confirm this?

There used to be a ftp install of Slackware hosted on SlackFiles but I can't find it anymore. I never could get it to work anyway.

Is is possible to copy the debian install iso to a small partition of the hardrive and use that to boot?
