Installing linux Fedora/Ubunutu - black screen

Hi,
Yesterday I decided to start a linux project, so I took out an old computer to just run an install on.
I have no cd reader on this computer so I decided to put Ubuntu on a USB mem I have.
Using "Universal-USB-Installer" I put it there and it seems to work on my other computers. But as I first tried to run Ubuntu from the usb it just got a black screen (or sometimes it would just look like the text mashes together). After that I tried installing and not just running, same thing happens. So I'm reading abit about it and though hey maybe my graphics card is too old, so I decided to try Fedora 15 install. Downloaded the ISO file, used the Liveusb-creator recommended on the webpage to put fedora on the usb. And I keep getting the same problem.

I can't install using basic graphics, I can't rescue, I can't install a new install.

"0.238230] Trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs..."
Then just black screen.

Clearly your bios can boot from USB or you wouldn't have got that far. I'm currently installing Fedora 15 using a key I configured with unetbootin-windows-357. Perhaps try a different USB key utility? It could be if your hardware is a little old, and your USB software is expecting more that it can't cope?

Good luck - I'm only half way through so it could still end in tears...

Yep, I think there is either not any drivers for my graphics card or there is something wrong with my graphics card.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get to the root of the problem?
I've also tried unetbootin-win-549 and same result there.
I really have no idea how to progress in this matter and would really like any help I can get.
