Installing Linux

I am trying to install SuSe for the first time. I will be using FIPS(a kind of PartitionMagic, I hope it works, it's free, it's in the SuSe CD). After defragmenting my hard disk hoping to create a partition, I am lost as FIPS is best load in DOS mode. What's DOS anyway? I heard of it for so long but never find out.
If I were to install SuSe during booting time, will it erase my WinXP(Install without partition)?
Thanks for your help.

Question Initial installation of SuSE 9.0 Professional

I recently bought SuSE 9.0 Professional on 5 CD-ROMS. When I go to install, the process only takes me through the first disk and doesn't ask for subsequent disks. I am a total newbe to Linux and have absolutely no idea of what I am doing right or wrong. Please reply to thall@thall.net if you have any advice.

FYI, I have attempted installation where YaST partitions my hard drive from scratch -- removing Windows and everything else from my hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Its been a while since I installed from the cds, but I believe discs 1-3 are base install & software packages. Discs 4 & 5 are source code a the manulas. Its something along these lines.

The base install is usually plenty unless you are running server or developing. The default install is only base, so if you just selected accept when the installation came up, thats what you got (disc 1).

You can always add some or all via Yast. It will prompt you for needed disc(s) when you select what to install.
