Installing kernel-source (Mandrake)

I burned a copy of kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586 to cd and tried installing it but I get the following error.

Quote:
Preparing... ###100%
l: kernal-source ###100%
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.4.22: cpio: mkdir failed-permission denied
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm a major linux newbie, so I'd appreciate it if you could explain in detail what I need to do to fix my problem.

Copy it over to your hard drive and double click it.

I forgot to mention that I'm unable to do that. I can't load a GUI because I don't have the drivers for my Radeon 9800 Pro. I've been told that I need to install the kernel-source and then I should seek help (afterwards), with installing linux Radeon drivers.

I should also point out that I was originally trying to install the kernel-source from c:\linuxstuff, which is on my WinXP hard-drive, but I was unable to pull up anything under that directory from the linux command prompt (ls didn't list anything). This is why I tried burning it to cd and installing it.

Did you try doing a

cd /mnt/
ls

to see if your win drive is there? Then you can CD to your win dir and run the rpm from there.

or, if you have it on cd, you can

cd /mnt/cdrom1
cp nameoffile.rpm /home/username

then install the rpm from there, all in command line. cp is for copy right? Been a while since I've had to use it.

cd /mnt/cdrom
cp kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm /home/mentatmm

Quote:
cp: cannot create regular file '/home/mentatmm': permission denied
It seems that no matter what I do I get a 'permission denied' error. Is it possible that I may not be logged into root and just think I am? Is there a way that I can find out what my root username is (I'm using the username/password that I setup during installation).

I figured out what I was doing wrong. I wasn't logging in as root (didn't realize that I actually had to use the username: root). It appears that the installation went great. I used the following commands:

cd cdrom/
rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm

Maybe you folks could help me figure out how to install the linux Radeon 9800 Pro drivers? I'm downloading them now and will probably have them burned to cd by the time you reply.

I'm guessing that Mandrake 9.2 supports Xfree86 version 4.3.0 so I'm downloading version: 3.2.8 of the linux drivers.
