Installing Kernel Problems
 

I have been trying to changed the kernel and having problems getting lilo to accept it. Every time I run lilo it tells me that the kernel is too big and gives me an error message fatal. I have followed all the correct steps. I downloaded a kernel from www.kernel.org. Updated the settings in lilo.conf, then run lilo. The name of the kernel I downloaded is kernelpatch-2.6.4.b2z. I have also extracted from it and that didnt help either. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

What you've downloaded is a source patch.

You need a complete source first. Then you need to compile and install the kernel. Source patchs are applied to complete sources, to upgrade sources before compiling. Downloading an already compiled kernel for your distro is probably a better option.

Could you give me a link for for the compiled 2.6.0 kernel please? Also do kernels have packages, ie rpm debian and tarballs, as at kernel.org website they didn't mention the distro the kernel was disigned for or what type of package it was.

What Distro are you using? Debian, Redhat, SuSE, etc....

Yes Kernels can come in packages, rpms, debs ( debian ), etc.

Kernel.org is for the kernel sources, for people working on the kernel or for people who like to compile there own kernels.

I understand now. My distro is Mandrake 9.1.

This is probably what you need. Linux 2.6.4 rpms for mandrake.
