was just on ubuntu guide site and it told me to do this
Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-j2re1.5
java -version
it said:
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package sun-j2re1.5
boxerboy@ubuntu:~$
i have it on desktop so im not sure what is going on. any ideas?
i also tried adding version as so:
Code:
boxerboy@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-j2rel.5 java -5.0
E: Command line option '5' [from -5.0] is not known.
boxerboy@ubuntu:~$
and thats not what i wanted to see either.

Seriously, did you not think of reading the installation instructions on Sun's site? They are here.

Hi,

With the post I set at the top you will need to change your sources list as shown at the top of the link I gave you.

Hope this works, if nit then post back.

Do other packages on that site work then?

If not then it is the sorces list. If they do work the I'm stuck too!

ok im downloading updates for ubuntu with all repos checked i thought i did this but i guess i forgot to. i have a bunch of java apps. in synaptic cheaked is there a certain one that will help me instead of getting from site. the java site info confused the hell out of me it says save it anywhere and i saved it to desktop because mozzila asked me where to save it and that was first place i thought of.

put the ##uncoment lines in also? last time i did this was to update to breezy and it didnt work thats why i ask. im tired of uninstalling and reinstalling ubuntu.
i had installed the universe sources from the ubuntu update managrer and now im installing java common and a few other java things. is that what the manual is doing manually what i did automaticly?

ok im redownloading java from website im doing the rpm (selfextracting) file saving it to desktop what is next?
that damn site confuses me cause im not real sure how the file system works on linux yet. and all this ./ bothers me cause i dont see it anywhere in files. and if ./ needs to be replaced by /home/boxerboy/desktop but i dont really know.
Code:
The file file:///home/boxerboy/Desktop/jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586-rpm.bin is a binary, saving it will result in a corrupt file.
thats what i get when i open it with kate im not sure if that is true for command line as well.
