installing java on linux (CentOS)

I am trying to get Java 1.4.2-15 running on Centos 5. The "bin" file is installed, but I am having trouble seeing the correct path name for "java" appear in the "PATH" variable when I reboot. Also, are there any variables that need to be set?

Put this at the bottom of /etc/profile

export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/java directory

or if you mean JRE instead of JDK, then you'd use export JRE_HOME=...

Then do:
source /etc/profile

And check by doing:
echo $JAVA_HOME (or$ JRE_HOME)
You may need to become root first
