Installing java into firefox
 

alright been having problems with this, i used the install manuals from Firefox, and java too install each.

i have them both in /usr/local/

i install em, i do the instructions, but each time same result when i load up a page with java, it still needs the plugin.

few strange things i noticed with the installs..... the java manual said the file name was jre-1_5_0-linux-rpm.bin, but the one i have, and downloaded from there site ( right next to the manual button ) says its 1.5.0.01, and same with the end result folder, 1.5.0.01,

i heard there was a incompatible version of java for foxfire 1.0, so if its 1.5.0.01 point me in the direction of a working one?

any help or assestence would be cool,

Most likely you don't have the java and firefox files linked together properly. You can have both fully installed, but if they aren't aware of each other, you'll keep getting the message that you are missing the plugin.

Here's the short and sweet version of how to get them to work -
Use the search function on your computer (CLI or graphical, whatever is easier for you) to find the location of the libjavaplugin_oji.so file. Once you know where that is, you want to create a symbolic link from the mozilla plugins directory to that file.

In my case, libjavaplugin_oji.so is found in /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so, so I went to my mozilla plugins directory (works for firefox as well) and created the symbolic link between the two. The command for that was something like .

I doubt your user account is also named jim, so you'll want to change that, but /home/(yourname)/.mozilla/plugins/ should be where the link is made. The mozilla directory should have the . before its name, it is hidden.

Please post back if that doesn't work for you.

ive done all of that sep firefox, and java dir's are in /usr/local/
i have the updated version, turns out thats what the 01 was.....just doesnt seem to work, the link is in the folder and everthing

It doesn't matter where the files are actually installed, as long as you have the link in the right place. My firefox is installed in /usr/lib/firefox, but I still have to link from /home/me/.mozilla/plugins to the java file I mentioned. Please go toy your /home/name/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and do an ls -al and print the results here. I still think you just don't have the linked files in the right location.

I have java 1.4.2, so according to the linked page I had to use the plugin in plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 in the method JimBass posted, which I did, but then firefox crashes whenever I try to open a page with a java applet in it. I found another libjavaplugin_oji.so in plugin/i386/ns610 but when I use that one firefox refuses to start entirely. Any ideas?

Alright, i didnt realise the .mozilla file was even there really, i went to it, but there wasnt a plugin directory....so i made one, and installed the link, still the same thing when i try to view anything in java.
i think maybe sence ive installed, diffrent versions of mozilla, i may have more then one .mozilla? or that the programs just arent compatible. also, i did install firefox and java on root, but am trying to get it to work on "mindless" hence the /usr/local/ i looked on root, and there isnt a .mozilla, but still on mindless

as requested here is the ls of home/me/.mozilla/plugins, but note, i created it, so that may be one fault.

go down the page a small way, java should be the third one listed.
I installed flash player yesterday after following a link from this page. There should be no problem with java.

first reply, AMD k6-2 512 ram, oldish FX card ( would run java on windows, and is compatible with linux, and im using redhat 9.0.

2nd reply, thats the same update i was using. 1.5.0.01.

I've tried as well but no help, for some reason I can't download from java, they block me I have no idea why, so I tried blackdown.

So as you can see I have it linked, also I have it linked to

javaplugin_oji.so@ libnullplugin.so*

But it still won't work, the command line I am doing is ln -s /usr/progs/java/j2re1.3.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so /home/peleus/.mozilla/plugins/

I have java installed at /usr/progs/java

Any help would be loved.

I have been pulling my hair out to get Java to work, now I'm bald, DOH! I had another issues that hosed things up. I have upgrade my foxfire so I have two installed but only the new one works, so for awhile I was making links to the wrong place!!!! I followed JimBass's post about creating the "link" it does work, for me anyway. I found you must look very closely at your own paths and versions of Java. It worked great for me after a few hours and a lot of bad language, plus hair loss.

Please do the following before installing java plugin

Go to "System" > "Administration" > "Security Level and Firewall". Enter your root password and click "ok". On the "SELinux" tab click on "Modify SELinux Policy", click on "Compatibility" to open it and tick the check box next to "Allow the use of shared libraries with Text Relocation". Click "ok". Reboot your machine to implement the new SELinux policy

Thereafter install the java plugin and it should work

I got it to work using JimBass's symboliclink deal. I never did a link before so I had issues as usual. Now when I do about:plugins I get a load of stuff, before nothing. But for some reason FOX news video's still don't work. I suspect they did some kind of Billy Gates downgrade and hosed us.
