Installing HPLIP on Fedora Core 3
 

I am VERY new to Linux - I installed Fedora Core 3 on an old machine three hours ago and am trying to get my printer (HP 3745) working. I downloaded HPLIP 3.9.12.run and am stuck. It seems to require that I have RPM-GPG-KEY imported and enabled before I can import and enable the prerequsite packages. When I run rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora I get an import failure message. Any help is welcome. I am trying to break out of 30 years in the MS jungle.

My first question is who are you installing this as? have you tried to login or do an su as root and install it that way?

If you have not. When at the command line try the following.
You might also try to see if you have yum installed.
if that doesn't help then here is a good reference for downloading it and compiling by hand.

Thanks for your advice. After logging in as root, I tried rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora and it worked. I then tried yum install hplip and got the message Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base. I tried the manual method you suggested starting with installing the dependency packages. This also resulted in the message Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base. I feel that I must have missed something in the manual. Any advice would be appreciated.

try running
or go to /etc/yum.repos.d/ and you should see something with -Base.repo edit that file and try uncommenting some lines.

fedora 3 is SO OLD that the software repos DO NOT EXIST any more
yum WILL NEVER WORK on such a old and UNSUPPORTED version of fedora

PLEASE do yourself a very big favor and install a current SUPPORTED operating system like CentOS 5.4

CentOS 5.4 should run on older computer .I have it running on a 8 year old dell

Yeah but I feel that CentOS is better tailored for a server than a Desktop. FC seems to be geared more for the desktop.

I agree with using Fedora as a desktop, but, Fedora 10 has just reached it's end-of-life, the only open repos at present are for Fedora 11 and 12. Time to download a new iso.

CentOS is just fine for an Office desktop
i can even run kde 4 on cent if i wanted to

i use it because there is a linux program ( built on and for RHEL5 ) that is a MUST have . However i do run it on fedora and Arch ( cent is my BACKUP os )

but fedora 3 !!! it is and HAS BEEN unsupported for 5 years -- there has been NO updates in it for 5 years

also on some new hardware fedora 3 might not even install because it is so old and " out of date ".

just KEEP in mind that fedora is a very fast development distro and as such things WILL brake , Updates might and do kill things .

Yea. I am a true newbie and didn't realize that Fedora 3 wasn't supported any more - I have an older machine so it fit pretty well with the age of the OS. I would like to stick with Fedora - as old as it is, it seems to fit my needs (explore/explore/explore) and my machine. I would like to go to the latest Fedora version but my internet connection is kind of slow. I installed version 3 from a DVD (full boat) but my internet connection is slow so a download might take many more hours than I can afford. Any thoughts?

I just ordered a Fedora 12 DVD and will install it next week. Thanks for the advice. Consider this issue SOLVED and the thread CLOSED.

Sorry first chance I had to get back to the thread. You made the right decision to get the Fedora 12 DVD.
