Installing .gz program by a user

I have to install a zipped program from within a particular user. What I did was give that user root privileges so I could install the program. Now I am being criticized for giving the root privileges so that I can do the install. Is there any way for a user to install a zipped program from within his user name without that user having root privileges?

Hi,

install it where? All that is required is write permissions to the installation directory.
