installing Gnucash
 

I am very new to Linux, but really like it better than Microsoft. my computer:
Dell 4500 1.8 mghz.
512 MG RAM
NVidia Geforce 4 DDR 64 MGRAM
two hard drives, a new 40 GB, and a used Quantum Bigfoot 8G, where I have installed Linux Red Hat 8.0.

My question. I bought Mandrake 9 from a vendor, tried to install it and got the problem with the mouse pointer in the upper left corner. Went back to Red Hat 8, and have no problems.

I want to use GnuCash, trying to get away from Bill's grubby hands. But I haven't figured out how to install. ON the Mandrake CDs, there are two files for GnuCash, a rpm and a devel. When I double click on the rpm, it says I need "Guile" and glibhttp. I tried to find those on the Cds, did, copied them to the /home/RAy directory, isntalled them, tried again, no go. I guess I need someone to walk me through installation the first time, so I can learn. I have the book "Linux: the complete reference, 5th edition," but it doesn't provide much help.

I suggest you try downloading the rpm for the missing files from the Red Hat site - www.redhat.com. They should be available there. Install them using Package Manager then try to install GNUCash using the Package Manager again. In order to run it select the Run Command from the Start Menu and type in GnuCash and run it - the program should start. I have used this program in the past but cannot remember the exact way to run it from the command e.g GnuCash, gnucash or Gnucash - for example not sure which is capitals and which are not, however I do know the command is correct.

Thanks for helping. I found out last night that 1) GnuCash was on my copies of Red Hat and 2)I did not have the C++ compilers installed. I installed all, including what I thought was the package manager. I just haven't found it yet. BUt i'm still looking :D :Pengy:
