Installing Gnome Desktop 2.4 - gmodule-2.0 problems

I'm trying to install Gnome 2.4 but I'm having problems when executing 'configure'.. (This is on the Debian 3.0 distro) ...

...
...

checking for gmodule-2.0 >= 2.0.1 gobject-2.0 >= 2.0.1 ORBit-2.0 >= 2.4.0... Pacage gmodule-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing 'gmodule-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gmodule-2.0' found
...
...

I couldn't find 'gmodule-2.0' using locate (with a prior 'updatedb')...

any ideas?
