Installing from source -- dependencies installed via RPM

I'm trying to install gDesklets from the source code, but when I run ./configure it cannot find pygtk-2.0.pc in the pkgconfig path, but when I query RPM it says pygtk is installed. This is because pkgconfig creates .pc files when you install compile and install programs from source, right? So how do you install programs from source whose dependencies were installed through RPM?

You'll need the devel rpm. It is something like this: pygtk-devel-2.0.rpm.

So I guess this means if dependencies are installed via RPM then you should find an RPM for the program or else reinstall all of the dependencies via source?
