Installing Firefox 3.5.1 Mint 7
 

Hi i'm new to Linux and have managed to install VmWare, VirtualBox etc but am having trouble with Firefox 3.5.1

I have downloaded the firefox-3.5.1.tar.bz2 and used the following command.

tar xvjf firefox-3.5.1.tar.bz2

This created a folder called firefox, in the firefox folder I tried ./configure and get an error No such file or directory.

The folder contains heaps of files and one called run-mozilla.sh file should I be using this to install or another command ?

I have tried sh run-mozilla.sh and get a Cannot Execute error

I don't expect to be given the answer but a push in the right direction would be good, I would like to learn.

Ok. You do not install it. There is a binary called firefox which when executed will launch firefox directly. You can copy the binary somewhere like /usr/lib or /usr/bin from where everyone can access. Create a shortcut on your desktop or on your panel from where you can launch it.

It would be difficult for you.
If you are using RedHat/CentOs/fedora try yum utility.

yum -y install Friefox

or if you are using Danian/Ubuntu then

Try apt-get utility.

these are good tools and easy to download and install packages.
It is also useful for update system/packages.

In the firefox folder that you unpacked there is a file (also) called firefox. That is the file you executute to start the firefox webbrowser. You can move the entire firefox folder to a more suitable folder. The normal home for it is under /opt . Then you can create a shortcut to it with the application found in /opt/firefox/firefox.

Thanks Guys for your replies, I have tried a few of your suggestions.

If I run the firefox file in the firefox folder it keeps starting the Version 3.0.12 I already have installed.

I tried the Repos but it only comes back with Version 3.0.12.

I have managed to install Shiretoko Which it says is Firefox 3.5.1 but this has some problems with some plugins as they say this is for Firefox V2 and above, these sites do not appear to recognise the Shiretoko Version.

As I am new to Linux should I only be looking for DEB version of software, or only use the package Manager ?

I will say I am very impressed with Mint, Moving from Windoze to Linux has been made easier with such a user friendly version, I am just struggling a little to install some apps.

What if I can only find apps that are not in deb format is there a correct procedure for installing these?,,
