Installing Firefox
 

Hi everyone, :)

I need a little help here. :)

I am using Mandrake 10 Download Community version. I have downloaded Firefox 0.8. I just do not have any idea how to install the firefox into my system.

any help is appreciated. :)

If you downloaded the binary version then you do not need to install it. Just extract the files and run the 'firefox' file. Do you have the source or binary package?

the binary file is found at www.mozilla.org
and there is no need to install just extract and run..

Yes, i downloaded binary file which was in (.tar.gz). and I unpacked it om my desktop.

I am able to run it. :) It is just confusing for newbie like me, since I had to look for the "equivalent " executable file to (.exe).


One more question if you guys do not mind, what is the equivalent folder to: "C:/Program Files/" in Mandrake?

Can I move the FireFox folder into that folder?

Put it where you want. I suppose the equivalent to "C:/Program Files/" would be /usr/lib but it's quite common to put things in /usr/local/lib or /opt/lib too. I find it easier to leave some things in my home folder sometimes. It depends whether they need to be available to other people and how long they'll be around for. How often do you update Firefox?

Executable files have their executable bit set in the permission flags. When you type ls, if you have colour, they will show up in a special colour. If you type ls -l, they will look something like -rwxr-xr-x instead of -rw-r--r-- (the x means executable).

For firefox, the executable you want to run is called firefox.

Thanks for the info. Yes I agree with that. I will upgrade Firefox whenever there is a new version. :)

In firefox, the equivalent of the (.exe) is "firefox", I am not sure what is the extension is. For right now I put firefox in my home folder. I will play around a bit to be more comfortable with this system.

It is called "firefox". Double-click it, you will be given choices. Choose "run".

Hello, I'm also new to linux, but when I click on firefox, it says "Couldn't find the program FireFox". Any help?

Making Firefox your default browser
 

Is it possible to make Firefox your default browser and can you put an icon either on the task bar or the desktop so you don't have to navigate to the /home folder every time you want to run it?

If you right click on the Kmenu you can select the option Menu Editor, from there you can make a link to firefox and make a pretty icon in your menu, just amke a new item and in the command box just put in the dir you put it in and tell it to run firefox
