Installing Fedora Core 3

I got a copy of Fedora from school today and I want to give it another shot on my computer. Unfortunately, it won't install for anything. I started out partitioning it on my own, and it said that it probably didn't have enough space, so I completely reformatted my F: drive. Well it still says it when I try. I try the auto format feature and I get a massive error and it doesn't even want to start. I'm assuming it's not a problem with the cd, but it wouldn't surprise me too much if there was.

I'd like to give it another try after having zero luck last time, but I think I'm just destined to never get a copy installed right.

One step at a time

Hi,

Take a step back for a second.

You need to be more specific. Saying 'massive error' means nothing to anyone that is reading your question.

Why don't you start with how your PC is currently partitioned. Are you trying to dual boot with Windows for instance?

Have you backed up your essential data before you began?

At what point is the installation failing? What exactly is the error you are getting?

Richard.

How much space do you have for FC3 and how many packages do you intend to install? If you want to install everything from the 4 CDs, then you need around 4.5GB...

OK, I went through and saved all the usual errors I get. Everything's backed up, so I'm not really worried about losing anything. First Error: "An error has occurred transferring the install image to your harddrive. You are probably out of disk space."

I've got an 80 gb hard drive I'm putting this stuff on, and it's blank except for the partitions that I chose for linux. I only get this error when I manually partition it.

Second Error (I get this one when I try to use the automatic partition) is too big to post anywhere. I saved the text file from the error, though. If anyone wants it let me know and I can send it to you, but I don't know how much anyone could get from it. It's the debug log I guess.

I've got Windows XP on my first hard drive, and I'm putting this on my second hard drive, which is currently completely empty.

The way I tackled this was by doing a manual partitioning ; the automatic one won't work on any terminal I've done so far.

Seeing as you must have a 100Mb boot partition, a swap approx double the size of your RAM and the rest as you please (well, a minimum of the package installed obviously).

So, here's what I created thru manual partitioning:

* 100Mb, mount /BOOT, type EXT3
* 40Gb type "LVM Physical Volume"

within which I created thru hitting the LVM button:

* 1Gb volume group, type SWAP
* 49Gb volume group, mount point /, type EXT3

This has worked fine for me on several machines.

Good luck!

Thanks I'll try that. Turns out the discs the school gave me are corrupt, so I had to download it last night.

OK I got it installed and everything, but now it says loading kernel parameters. It's been there for about 5 minutes. Is it supposed to take this long?

Ignore this post, the computer I'm on messed up and double posted.
