Installing Fedora
 

Really new at this...

Currently I have windows 2000. Do I need to partition my drive before installing Fedora Core 6? Or will the install do this?

The install will do this but you should defrag your harddrive before you parition

actually you can make new partition under the fedora core isntallation.
And basiclly, you need 2 new partition to install linux with linux filesystem format (usually ext2 or ext 3), first partition is you root (\) using ext 3, and second is swap partition with default size is 2 times your RAM (i usually set it to 1 GB)

Thank you but I am still confused...

I am really new at this---

I started installing Fedora-- Here is where I am at:

1. I chose during the installation, Create custom layout
My other choices were:

a. Remove all Partitions on selected drive and create layout
b.Remove linux partitions
c.Use free space on selected drive and create default layout
d.Create custom layout


2.When I chose Custom layout -- I select the hard drive and hit the tab "New"

What do I do from here? Cause when I chose ext 3 for root and try to create one with lets say for 5 Gb it says I do not have that space? and I do?

Also , you had suggested a second partitio as swap? I do not have this option ,I have

a. /
b. /boot
c. /home
d. /tmp
e. /usr
f. /var
g. /usr/local
i. opt.

you have to resize your NTFS parition before you do anything

You need to have FREE space on your disk, i.e. space not covered by the windows filesystem (NTFS or fat32, whichever you have). In other words, you need to shrink your windows partition before you start installing (this can be done using the Gparted livecd, which can be downloaded from the internet). Alternatively, if your disk is already cut up into multiple partitions, you can format one those without resizing anything.

You need to read the above too, but I thought I might go ahead and add that you need to create the swap partition, you need to tell the partitioner to create a partition of filesystem type 'swap', rather than another ext3 partition; the list you see there is filesystem mount points, which means where on your filesystem the partition will show up.

um.. i wouldn't recommend shrinking windows partition, last time i do that, it mess up my windows 2000, i suggest you migrate your system completely to linux or buy a new hdd :P
