Installing .deb files on Ubuntu

I am trying to install a .deb file on Ubuntu and it starts to do it, but then tells me it cannot find the file. Help!

How are you trying to install? From a shell, or using gdebi?

Welcome to LQ
Please google question before posting. You will usually find the answer there.

Open a shell or terminal ( a blank screen with a curser in the upper left corner)
then follow the instructions in this link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dpkg
dpkg -i <package name>.deb

Well a deb should automatically install. All you will need to do is click on it. It has always worked like that for me.

Thank you all for your answers. I actually stumbled onto the answer because the file I was trying to install needed Java or Iced Tea, which I installed the latter, and it let the program go through. It was a dependency issue.

It was great to see so many postings that could help.
