Installing avifile.patch

Hi, I started using Redhat 8.0 ~1 month ago. I'm trying to install the avi4xmms plugin. First it instructed me to install xmms 1.2.3 or later (as 1.2.1 came with the redhat install), and I installed the lastest version, 1.2.10. After this, I realized I had to add a line of code to the xmms source; I did so and recompiled. Then I was instructed to install avifile.patch before installing the program itself. The problem is I have no idea how to install this filetype. I know you have to input: patch -pnum FILENAME. Help listed several options that could be used in the place of or with -pnum , but I didn't know what any of these options meant. I appreciate any help in advance!
