What version of Ubuntu? If you're still running a version 8 Ubuntu, it's five years old and you really should upgrade to a supported release before doing anything else.

In general "sudo aptitude install apache2" will do the trick.

Example, Ubuntu 8.04 : All apache2 packages ..
http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/hardy-updates/apache2
.. where also the build prerequisites are shown.

If you think you will build a version yourself :
Please see the file rules with the default configure line
(for apache2_2.2.8) http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...tu0.24.diff.gz
It's a complex one.
The default configure options ("AP2_COMMON_CONFARGS") : 2,600 characters.
