Installing a Creative modem blaster DL5621 in Mandrake 8.1

Okay, I went out and bought a new controller based modem because I was told those are the easiest to install in Linux. The problem Im experiencing is, I can query the modem and the ATX commands come up, but all the boxes match the corresponding ATX commands. The problem Im having is that I dont think the serial port is installed in Linux. Im sure Im sounding like a total idiot, but I really know less than nothing about Linux. Can someone please help me??

P.S. My modem is a Creative Modem Blaster DL5621 and it is installed on COM1 and the IRQ for COM1 is IRQ=4.

If the AT commands are coming back normal and Mandrake is seeing the modem then it must be setting the port correctly on boot. What errors or problems are you getting that make you think something is wrong?

Well, I opened a terminal window during connection, click connect, it says initializing modem and in the terminal box I get an error message. No other words appear, just 'error'. Could it be I have the wrong init string?? If so where can I get an updated init string?? I went to http://americas.creative.com and they dont support Linux at all, the lousy windoze idiots. Do you happen to know where in my system I can go to get my serial port info. like the I/O addy and the IRQ?? Maybe if I can access it, I can change it if the settings arent correct. Thanx for your help.

Hmm, i'm a little conflustered about the connect part while connecting? But that's ok, the init strings at creative labs should work exactly the same in Linux. What program are you using to dial-up? May try another program also. I'd go into your system BIOS menu and see what things are set at in there before changing linux's settings. See if you've got something accidentally switched on com 1 or what not. After that...You can look into the setserial command in linux and see if that might be right fo the situation also. Just type man setserial. Is your modem 'definately' com 1? Or is that just what windows puts it on etc..?

Well, I am going by what windows says about the modem. Windows reports COM 1, so thats what Im going on. Thanx for the help.

Well, if it's a hardware modem connected to your serial port, and Windows sees it at Com1 then most likely it is Com1 in linux. What you could do is change the modem to your other serial port and see how it likes being on Com2 (which seems to be a happy place for most modems). If it's possible, would you be able to post some basic text from your bios as to what the com port section says? Just to make sure all the ports & IRQ's are correct. If it is Linux, are you still able to browse the internet and so forth, does the errror cause functionality loss per say or just an annoyance?

Well, good news.. I can connect to the internet, but I cant stay on.. I changed dialers to the Gnome PPP internet dialer and it dials, handshakes, and then about 30 seconds later I get an error. It says PPPD daemon has failed. Do you know what that means??

Thanx for your help

Same Modem Here

Resovled connection problems by setting the jumpers on the modem to Non-plugnplay, com3 irq4.
Not had any prob since but i am running slackware8.
