First the Bad News-I have a Toshiba 7000CT and have never gotten DSL to load without freezing....As a matter of fact it freezes at exactly that same spot!
Putting DSL on USB is easy but there are some things to remember- DSL installed to HD has it's pro's and con's- If you apt-get the wrong program or do any number of things it might "break" the system. From the website- "Now for the warning: Damn Small is not derived purely from Debian, if you 'apt-get install' the wrong application you may break something, for instance, the X servers." DSL is better as a frugal install... If you are hard-bent on DSL HD install and DSL won't load or install right-try either Feather Linux- ( http://featherlinux.berlios.de/ ) Or DSL-N ( http://damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-n/ ) I know that's not what you want but I successfully booted, loaded and installed DSL-N to my Toshiba-I don't know why DSL freezes and DSL-N doesn't as they are almost the same... You might want to try "Billix" ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/billix/ ) It has DSL and other stuff too-It'll probably still freeze though-just try every "cheat-code" you can. Tell us more about the exact issues DSL is having on the laptop? Also, I will tell you how to put DSL/DSL-N/Feather on USB if your still interested, you can also exchange either DSL-N/Feather with DSL in the Billix Distro. Does your Toshiba boot from USB or do you have a boot-floppy? |
My Toshiba can Boot from a USB. I personally wanted to install DSL because i saw a friend of mine do it on a HP laptop and he installed it on the HDD. It was amazing and he even got World of Warcraft to run on it. I just want something that runs lighter than WinXPMedia but when i saw DSL i fell in love, it was amazing how fast it was running on just 128MB OF RAM !

Do you have a floppy drive?
You cantry a network internet "poor man's install" and then do a HD install. It's called "frugal_lite.sh" see this article- ( http://damnsmalllinux.org/network-install.html ) Right-click on this link and select "save as" ( http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...frugal_lite.sh ) Here's the DSL mirror- ( http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...small/current/ ) If you don't have a floppy drive we can do the netinstall via USB. Try "rootdelay=10" at the boot line as one of the Append options/cheats. |
No i do not have a floppy drive on any of my computers, and the one that did have it died.

OK-you have a USB port you can boot from?
If you have a USB port that will boot your OK. Now, download my new MultiDistro "LinuxLive-Beta-USB" here- ( http://www.webfilehost.com/?mode=viewupload&id=1508286 ) It has alot of stuff and I made it after you mentioned you couldn't get DSL to work on your 'puter. It will probably still freeze though-but DSL-N won't freeze-that's odd isn't it? They are almost the same-so I don't know why DSL freezes and DSL-N doesn't? So-try to install Feather/DSL-N or one of the others on the LinuxLive-Beta-USB I made. There is a reason DSL freezes and no one seems to know why...? I have seen this complaint here often with DSL and Toshiba laptops. I love DSL too and wish I could install it to my Toshiba 7000CT. If you do get DSL-N to install right, after reboot it wouldn't load "X" right, so you will probably have to edit a config file. Also see my post about multidistro if your interested-start at "reply #61" The "LinuxToolz-Beta" download is at "reply #80" and LinuxLive-Beta-USB is at "reply #91" Report back whether or not you installed DSL/DSL-N, etc. Note also that if DSL/DSL-N/Feather can't find the KNOPPIX image, try just using the DSL/DSL-N/Feather distro by itself-not my Multidistro but DSL-N on USB alone... |
How can i trust that download?
|
Yeah-your right-there may be an intergalactic virus in there...
|
Oh come on man in all seriousness !I really want to install this OS.
