Installer does not launch
I've downloaded a program with most simple instructions: download, extract the tar file and type [programfile]file/install in the directory where the extracted files are. Voila, You are (or you are supposed to be) done
When I type that command, I always get 'no such file or directory' error. This is most curious because I'm in the directory where all the extracted file are. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? |
try putting a "./" (without quotes) in front of the command you are trying to execute.
eg ./foo --bar Unless you have a "." in your environment Linux will not look in the current directory rather it will look in /usr/bin and other set environment variables. |
What is it you are trying to install, and what command are you executing to launch the installer? Is there package already available for your distro rather than compiling from source? A little more info would be useful.

The program is url-filter, a content filtering add-on to Smoothwall.
The package does not require any compiling, that is why so minimal instructions. Extract, type smoothwall-urlfilter/install and you're done. Even graphical componets are installed automagically. But something must be quite wrong? |
Did you try:
./smoothwall-urlfilter/install ie put a dot slash in front of command? |
Yes, I did. Still, 'no such file or directory'. This is most confusing, because these actions should be very basic Linux operations.
Taken from the web page of the program (urlfilter-net): "Copy the tar archive via SCP to your IPCop or SmoothWall box. Windows users can use WinSCP for this. Keep in mind that SSH must be enabled and you will have to use port 222 instead of 22. Login as root on the console or via SSH. Windows users can use PuTTY for this. Extract the tar archive with the command tar -xzf distribution-urlfilter-version.tar.gz (Replace distribution with the name of the distribution you have installed - either ipcop or smoothwall - and replace version with the version number of the package you have downloaded) Start the installation with the command distribution-urlfilter/install That's it. Open the GUI with your web browser and configure the URL filter... " So, the command is "smoothwall-urlfilter/install", but still that error message? |
Ok
I downloaded the file and extracted it. you need to change into the directory that is created when you extracted the tarball. so, type ls to list directory contents, then type cd smoothwall-filter ./install which should work like a charm. |
Yes, that worked. I wonder why the author gave instructions that does not work. :? Anyway, thank You for Your help.. :) |
