installed windows xp on linux computer = error 17 - kind of solved :P
 

I've tryed to install windows xp on a acer aspire one with linux already installed (original linux software)

I used my acer recovery disk from my own laptop.
install was succesful, but when I reboot'ed only thing happening was "error 17"

is ther any solution to this problem? I need to remove linux compleatly to run this computer as a pure windows computer.

maybe the windows forums would be happy enough to help you remove linux .

HINT : use gparted , delete everything , install windows again .
if that doesn't work , then it means that either windows can't run on that computer (giving specifications of the comp would help ) or windows needs more configuration for certain things

Error 17 sounds like a grub bootloader problem, ie your Acer disk didn't perhaps reload the boot code for Windows, or remove grub entirely. Odd, but not unusual with OEM "recovery disks". You might want to look at the Acer website for your model and see if there are any other options for reloading the OS. If you have a Knoppix or other live Linux CD disk handy you can use it to follow the previous poster's hint.

I have tried using a linux live cd, but one of my problems is that there is no internal cd drive on this laptop... I have to use external usb cd drive, and it will not boot from usb cd drive (yes i've cheked bios settings)

p.s. this is not to pro windows, I am a fan of ubuntu, but this laptop is for my parents in-law, and they can't use linux. :P

reason for postin in linux forum is beacause windows users are in denail and do not recognize grub or linux as useble software ;) heh heh

I also thougt of taking out hard drive and insert into a nother pc, but hard drive is built in to motherbord and is non-removeble.

I do not have any technical data on the acer aspire one laptop.....

lol.. this sound like a test : give someone the worst situation ...

how in thhe world a pc without cd drive not boot from usb ... do u have a usb flash drive ? try using unetbootin and put ubuntu or knoppix on it . try again . then follow as i said ... if u have another computer u may boot over the network , which i don't know how to do , but all the experienced users here i guess would be happy to help ... (even a google search would do )

this was my plan, but without any possibility to boot, no possibility to format....

do u have any other computer in the network that you could use as a server for the image file so that your computer can boot from it and do as desired and then mark this thread as solved ? :)

trying to download knoppix on to a flash drive and reboot from device. :)

I'm a little unsure how you managed to install XP (or Ubuntu for that matter) if you can't boot from a USB CD and or thumb drive? Was it a PIX type install?

How did you manage this? This will provide some options for a fix.

It certainly does sound like a boot loader issue...

I do have a other computer but do not have the know how to set up as server and how to use network boot.

I don't know how but my acer aspire has netboot option in
bios, so maybe yours does.

thanks, did find some useful hints, but that was for pc with windows as standard...

but trying some stuff now, so let's ceep the fingers crossed :)

it has network boot option yes, but I do not know how to us it...

My Acer Aspire One came with XP pre-installed and I made a
recovery disc using a usb DVD writer. I then used gparted
to shrink the ntfs partition and create "unallocated freespace"
and then installed Fedora to it from a usb flash drive. The boot
menu can be reached as soon as you turn on the netbook and the
Acer splash screen appears press "F12" key and the boot menu shows.
On mine with a usb device currently plugged in there are 3 choices:
1. IDE 0
2. USB HDD
3. Network Boot
If I choose 2 then the usb flash drive will boot.
