installed fedora core 1 and can't boot
 

I installed fedora core 1 on a presario sr1010nx ( this may be the problem ... Its kind of a cheap box )

I wiped the hard drive clean and let fedora decide how to create and format the partitions..

The install went fine.....

When it boots back up I come to the grub... I select fedora.. it seems like it is trying to start up and then it rebboots the machine.

I've tried also booting from the boot disk that was created during the install...
From the boot: prompt I hit enter and it again it seems to try to come up... the last message I see and this comes by quickly and I could not pause on it is something like " OK boot to the kernel". and then the machine reboots.

I have tried turning plug and play off in the bios and a slew of other things i've seen on the web where I have seen issues similar.... but not quite the same as mine.... But I am definately a newbie...... So am not sure what to do next...

One other thing... I can get this to boot in rescue mode from the dvd I've installed from.

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

I would use LILO.

installed to the MBR.

The problem is not with GRUB!!!!!

If you can see the gui terminal presented by GRUB and select fedora then GRUB is not the problem here. Installing LILO will not help!!!!

Lots of possibilities:
1. The kernel 2115 doesn't work with your hw.
2. There are certain services that is causing a conflict.
3. etc.etc.

Edit the grub configuration for Fedora (press e after selecting fedora)
Select the second line that contains the kernel keyword then type e again to edit.
Append "S" to the end of the line.
Press Esc then b to boot into single user maintenance mode.
If you are able to reach the # prompt. Then most likely you have some services that doesn't work well with your machine. Check the log files in /var/log for error messages.

Fedora Core 1 Won't Install on Presario SR1010NX

You're the first person I've heard of who has successfully installed Fedora on the Presario SR1010NX! What's your secret? Here's what happens when I try (using Fedora Core 1 discs from "Red Hat Linux Bible"):

1. I insert disc 1 and boot off the CD.
2. The installation screen comes up and gives me the vmlinux: prompt.
3. I press Enter to begin the installation.
4. The installation process prints out only the first 2 lines and simply reboots the PC, putting me back at step 2.

I've tried countless permutations of the BIOS and have tried booting with nousb, nopcmcia.

How did the get the darn thing to install?

Another newbie :newbie: to linux world.
I have the same issue when i try installing Madrake 10.0 official on my SR1010NX.
I can only see first 2 lines and the system reboots.
Is there anything special that i should be doing to install Mandrake? Or am I expecting too much from this cheep refurbished box :scratch:

(when booting installer)enter: linux acpi=off or linux text acpi=off. thatll solve all your problems. Thats how I had to install fedora core 2 on my sr1010nx works perfectly. Even dual boot XP.

To sum up, here's how to get Fedora Core to install on the Compaq Presario SR1010NX:

1. Get a copy of Fedora Core 2 (FC1 won't work).
2. At the installation prompt, enter "linux acpi=off".

Now if only I can get my CD player to work.

Cd Problems
 

I m guessing you mean getting it to play cd's right. Ok open terminal type: xmms
Then right click on the title bar goto preferences CD plugin change to digital output then open /mnt/cdrom for the tracks.
Also in Fedora the sound is muted by default. Open Terminal type: alsamixer make sure master, pcm, hardware are all on or unmuted.
