installed but not run,in linux
 

i am irritated that all software after installing does not run!do i need to use terminel everytime?and if so what ia the proper command to run in linux mint command line?

You ***MUST*** give us an example of a software you are trying to run! We cannot possibly give you every command to run every software in Linux, that would be absurd. :)

i have had a problem with,deluge bittorrent,tor browser,and others,is this always the way to run a program ?after download do i need to use terminal?deluge was from the distro of mint O.S.,yet when i tried to download a torrent from Pirate bay it did not link to deluge!if it was not for "transmission " coming on as the path i would not of been able to download.i have used the commands provided by deluge on the web page that shows gui,linux commands and they did not run it,i kept getting bavk from terminel "what are you trying to do ,more or less.sudo?root?universe?what all these are i do not know ,i am asking am i sudo?universe?what?i am new at this obviouslyother times i follow the directions from posts and it comes back" command not found"what is the deal?

What desktop environment are you running? (Unity, Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc.)

In most desktop environments, you launch Deluge by going to the Applications menu, Internet, Deluge.

Or sometimes you can press Alt+F2 and type deluge.

In Ubuntu's Unity however you press the Windows/Super key and type Deluge.

This is really basic Linux 101 stuff that should be covered by your distro's help documentation. :)

You're not giving much info to go on to help you. Why not supply some filenames that you are trying to install or the app you are trying to run. Most Linux GUI file managers are like ones on other OS they know to handle common files by extention. From taking a quick look at the deluge webpage that is how they tell you to installs is double-click on the file so the file manager and call the appropriate install app.

So supply more info and people can help you.

thanks snowpine all iknow is im running LInux mint ,and a newbie,i dont even know whatdesktop environments are.i might sound quite green because i am lost.i do know how to launch from my menu no problem its there" and its the same as it looked on Ubuntu "deluge".my problem as stated is after i download something do i also have to make it "run"by the command terminel?because tor,deluge and even chrome i had to go to files find and then start or as they say openwith archieve manager or whatever.deluge it says i am to go to terminel and the code did not work ,maybe because i am in another desktop environment than stated,hoe do i figure out what environment i am using,how do i tell?

again it is installed but the extension failed to load deluge.i will go back to the web pace for deluge,but my question is "do all installs have to be run after?with a command in the terminel?

It sounds like you are installing applications by manually downloading them and uncompressing whatever tarball you get. It's much easier to use Mint's package manager to download and install applications. As a general rule, when you use the distro's package manager, the applications you install we automatically be added to the menu of whatever GUI you are using. If you download files by hand and install them manually (not through the package manager), you would usually need to add them to the menu yourself. For a newbie, it's generally easier and less error prone to use the package manager (think of it as the "app store" for your computer) if at all possible.

The only software you would need to run from a terminal are text based programs that don't use the GUI.

No they don't all have to be run from the command line, it all depends the install package the creater made. Looking at your logon assuming you're Mac user its the same you download a .pkg file and double-click it and the installer run.

Also as btmiller pointed out most programs are available from the distro installer application. Like Ubuntu's Software Center, or Synaptic Package Manager, they are GUI app's that list all software, and you can click and install it. I took a quick look and Tor and Deluge are both in the Software Center.

It is called Software Center in Ubuntu and Software Manager in Mint, but the basic concept is the same. :)

If you use the distros package manager and distro supplied packages it should show up in a menu in the window manager. In debian, if you install a different torrent client, it will change the default. And you'll need to restart the browser to have those changes take affect. You can use dpkg-reconfigure to change the defaults without re-installing the package you want to be default. And other means to an end.

Not all browsers play well with certain things, so it could just be your browser that's giving you a hard time. Another browser may not give you any of the frustrations that you're experiencing.
