Installed,Booted,logged-in, then what?
 

Hi,
This is my 1st linux install, or rather attempt.

I installed Mandrakelinux 10.1, a 3 cd edition, obtained off of an emule download client

filename- 'Mandrakelinux-10.1-Official-Download-CD1.i586.iso' X 3CD

the install crashed, i think it was, near the the end at the summary part so then i rebooted and repaired the last few steps without fortnately having to go through the whole process again. Worked fine thankully then though i had to lower my security levelfrom high to standard cos the rpinter was'nt accepted (regarded a security risk apparently) and the sound card config would need sorting out, but i could do that post-instal anyway.l

So Anyway, to cut a long story short-

My install was completed,done.
So i rebooted ,came to the lilo boot loader,picked linux, the default,& continued boot then i come to -

(local host? it might of said)user) login: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
password: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

And i entered my login name and password for the single user account i set up during instal,not the root password otherwise it would of said root.

The this seeems fine so far my entries are correct, cos incorrect entries told me or implied so ,but then i get the prompt/ response-

[local host@username] username} $


NOW MY Q. IS , WHAT DO I DO NOW?


I typed 'help' but made neither head nor tail of the list of commands/arguments or expressions at the command prompt
interface.

Hope all the info. is here to answer my Q.

Thanks for the help.i I'm either nearly there or miles away. A little puzzled i suppose.

i forgot to mention it's a dual boot with windows 2000 on a single hard drive on a pentium 3, 550mhz

partitions are-

hda1 windows(os-c)
hda5 (data-d-drive)
hda6,7 & 8 -linux(os)

I was'nt really thqt confident or knowledgeable to mess about with parttiion placement so left it to auto-allocate without mixing those partitions up further. and a little resizing and creating, bu the linux part was shown in the diagram as last.

To get into the graphical user interface, you should be able to just type "startx" (no quotes) at the prompt. If you get an error, then something wasn't configured correctly in the install. Post the message here, and we'll try to get you sorted out if this happens. Also, google for a tutorial that explains how to use the command line. I suggest the Rute Tutorial,
