Question Installation Questions..(Checklist)...

Hi.... (#1) I'm going thru my checklist before I do any installing of the Mandrake Linux 10.0, and I was wondering ??..When the download gets to the "Boot Loader" section, I want to go with the "LILO", but I already have the "Partition Commander" as my current bootloader..(I don't want to cause a conflict in my system)...Do I have to un-install the Partition Commander??, or just select a different (LILO) bootloader??

(#2)...Sound Card Question: I 've read that the 10.0 can detect the "Sound Blaster16" sound card that is on my computer....Which DRIVER do I select when I get to this selection..??OSS, or the "audigy" one...???

(#3)Configuring the Network Device: I am wondering what the "Netmask" numbers are??... I know myPrimary & Secondary DNS numbers from my "IP".. Where do I get the 'netmask' number from...????? (or is it the same number??

(#4) When I get to the "Configuring network device eth08139too"
what is reccommended, Automatic, or Manual configuration.????

****Note: This install is replacing the 9.0 version I already have on the system..I am trying to keep the same settings from the 9.0 when it comes to the IP connections...

Thanks For All of the Advice...

P.S. I was successful in downloading the ISO (cd-1),and burning it...and it loaded up perfectly on the FIRST try....LUCKY ME...LOL...

You should be able to leave partition comander there and just install lilo in the root partition of the linux install (same as / or /boot, depending on haow you do the partitions) so lilo would go in something like /dev/hda5 or /dev/hdb2 rather than /dev/hda... It will depend on the system, but if you put it in /dev/hda it will take over from partiton comander (which would also work as you could get lilo to boot the other OS's) Your choice.

(#2)...Sound Card Question: I 've read that the 10.0 can detect the "Sound Blaster16" sound card that is on my computer....Which DRIVER do I select when I get to this selection..??OSS, or the "audigy" one...???

It should be pretty automatic. The OSS driver covers most and the SB16 is about as compatible as you can get.

(#3)Configuring the Network Device: I am wondering what the "Netmask" numbers are??... I know myPrimary & Secondary DNS numbers from my "IP".. Where do I get the 'netmask' number from...????? (or is it the same number??

If you are on a local network, the IP number will be the same as it would be in windows. The mask will generally be 255.255.255.0.

(#4) When I get to the "Configuring network device eth08139too"
what is reccommended, Automatic, or Manual configuration.????

Auto should work, tho I do manual. IT doesn't seem to make much difference.

Are you upgrading 9.0 or replacing???

Thumbs up WOW...Great INFO...

Hi TIM, Thanks for the great answers....I will jot them down, and use them when I finish with the last 'ISO' burn....

I am replacing the 9.0 (Mandrake) that is already out there on my system...I read that a clean install is the best way to go... (www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install100.html )....The first install of the 9.0 was NOT done by me personally....I had the 'box' in for repairs, and I had them do it for me...Sooo, I am really new to this experience....

Again, a big Thanks ! ! !

Okay, clean is usually best. Make sure you do a custom or expert install (or whatever they call it in mdk10) so you can be sure the install goes to the right place etc...

Will Do.....

YES....I will go the "expert"install route... I will double check where the partitions are located, and make sure the bott goes to the /dev/hda location...

I just hope I have enough space already partitioned from the first install 9.0......
with my luck, I'll mess up the windows side...LOL
