This is odd as I have had capitals in my username since I first installed Ubuntu 5 years ago.

I hadn't realised it it wasn't suppose to be possible.

There is a difference in your users Real name (most distro allow to fill in that field at installation), and the login name. While you can use capital Letters in the first, it isn't allowed in the latter.
