installation problems

Hi all,

I would like to install Fedora linux 6 as a dual boot with windows xp.
I created a linux ext2 partition of 10gb using parition magic. I then downloaded an installation image (FC-6-x86_64-DVD.iso) and burnt this image to a dvd as a bootable image.

I insert the dvd and restart the system and get a "Operating system not found" message and it stops there. I have a suspecion that I am using the wrong image, my computer has a Intel T2400 @ 1.83Ghz dual processor... could this be the reason ?

Can anyone give me some solutions to the above problem and also give me some general guidance(including any websites etc) on how to go about the install.

thanks in advance,

Jakub

I believe your processor is limited to 32bit (not 64 bit compatible). Which means you should download the i586 version DVD, not the x86_64. I like Mandriva's DVD, it can install both 32 bit and 64 bit. Also, make sure to burn an ISO image or CD image option with your burning app, not a data DVD.

If you cannot boot the DVD at all, then the fact that it is 64-bit is not the issue.
Is the BIOS setup for booting from CD/DVD?
Without the DVD, will the system boot? (Is Windows still installed?)

Make sure that the DVD has multiple files and folders on it. If it just has one file ending in .iso, then you have fallen into a classic trap--When you get the right CD, be sure to "burn from iso".

Finally, I would consider getting a distro where you can do the initial install from ONE CD. Everything else is installed over the net using the package manager---MUCH easier and more efficient.

Hi,

My BIOS IS setup for booting from cd/dvd first and the system will boot without the dvd, as I have win xp installed already.

why does the dvd have to have multiple files on it ? I thought all I need was the iso image.. I am installing fedora linux 6 which i believe can be installed with one image on one dvd.

thanks,

J.T
