I have been an XP user since it was released, and not long ago caught wind of how many people are switching to Ubuntu, so I decided to give it a try.
I downloaded the desktop-i386.iso, MD5'd it, and put it on disk. I then rebooted my system and ran it off the CD, it worked beautifully (if not a little slow because of CD).
I decided to install it onto my secondary drive (previously for media storage), so I ran the installer off the desktop, imported nothing from XP, and finished. I should note that I wasn't connected to the net at the time, so I got a message about updates not being installed yet, and to do it later, but I don't think that is the source of my problem.
I rebooted once the installation was finished, hit F8, and tried to boot off my new Ubuntu drive. I got the "Error loading Operating System" error, and had to reset. Retried just in case, same error.
I googled around for a while to try and solve the problem myself (I hate posting problems in boards), but to no avail.
I'm using a 40GB drive for win32, and a 160GB drive for Ubuntu, if that helps. It is probably a simple problem that's easy to solve, as I am completely new to the OS. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
I'm having the same problem. Downloaded ubuntu 7.1 from two different sites now since the first one didn't work. MD5'd and ran check disk from CD boot. All checked out correct. I'm attempting to install on the primary 10GB HD. Set partition to 8 GB primary w/ 2 GB swap. I've since tried different configurations including whole disk. Attempted to install at least 6 times and the OS doesn't seem to put the necessary files in the root directory. When I access the HD from the CD after rebooting, there doesn't appear to be any files in the root directory. The HD is set to read only - I'm assuming because I'm not able to "log in" with the account I set up during the install; the CD boot doesn't appear to have the option to log in.
Well, thanks anyway. I thought I'd get a few more suggestions than I did, but I'm not going to complain. Thanks for replying arochester.
I didn't want to, but I'm going to stick with Windows XP, it's proven to be far less of a hassle.

PS. I hope you figure it out CooperHk.
Next time you want to try Linux install GRUB to the MBR of primary HDD, then you'll have boot menu with choices which OS to boot.
