Xgraph : Isn't built at ns-allinone.2.xx install. Never.
And no luck usually at building xgraph with any later Fedora.
You will have to use an rpm package. xgraph-12.1-7pclos2011.i586.rpm for 32bits:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7S...WZ3MEdPalZ5MEk
Or xgraph-12.1-1.pclos2013.x86_64.rpm for 64bits OS :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing
The downloaded package is to be installed with # yum localinstall xgraph*

@ knudfl,
Nam is working but still have problem in xgraph as follows :

Parameter TitleFont: can't translate `helvetica-18' into a font (defaulting to `fixed')

root@localhost examples# xgraph surface2.xg
Parameter LabelFont: can't translate `helvetica-10' into a font (defaulting to `fixed')
X Error: BadFont (invalid Font parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 55 (X_CreateGC)

I tried to follow steps as u mentioned and this too :

The source : http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool....1.orig.tar.gz
The required patch http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool....debian.tar.gz
cd xgraph-12.1.orig/ && tar xvf xgraph_12.1-13.debian.tar.gz &&
patch -p1 < debian/patches/debian-changes-12.1-13 && aclocal &&
./configure && make ; # make install : And you have /usr/local/bin/xgraph

by Both am getting above error.

# 3 .

Which Fedora 17 is it about ?
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...Ask_a_Question
http://linuxsilo.net/docs/smart-questions_en.html
I.e. the architecture (i686 / x86_64) must be told too : $ uname -m <Enter>

Xgraph : Read post #2 → "no luck usually at building xgraph with any later Fedora."
Which means : Do not try building xgraph on Fedora 17 !
Use an rpm package ,,, see post #2.

The same for 'nam' : Do not expect a perfect build result, nam-1.13 / Fedora 17.
Use a package that was build with a suitable OS :
Either use the proof binary, ref. #2 or :
New rpm packages (Oct 2013) for all Fedora 12-21 and CentOS 6 / Scientific Linux SL6:
32bits nam-1.14-1.el6.i686.rpm https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing
64bits nam-1.14-2.el6.x86_64.rpm https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...it?usp=sharing

*** Xgraph and nam aren't returning errors here with the 32bits Fedora 17,
by using items listed in post #2.

Seems you installed that package at an earlier occasion.

Checking if a package is installed : $ rpm -qa | grep xgraph
Listing the package content : $ rpm -ql xgraph

# 6 : If you added any *PATH text to .bashrc, please delete the text.
No *PATH settings are required for any ns2, when it's your computer.
The 15 year old text, "you must .." that comes at the end of ./install ,
was intended for University computers, where you have no install permissions
to /usr/local/bin/ . Which is also the place for the executable 'ns' ,
.. when you have done # make install , in ns-allinone-2.xx/ns-2.xx/.

Yes, you can delete that. See post #8.

One other thing to do : Make a copy of ns to ns-crcn,
and # cp ns-crcn /usr/local/bin/
.. Then you are sure, it's the right ns, and can do $ ns-crcn 0-test4maccon.tcl
.. etc. etc. from the examples "crcn-examples-12.2013.tar.gz".

May that's the reason :
You are not supposed to run any user commands as root.
* ns2 commands (except # make install) : Please do not use root.

I.e. : Only administrative commands that require root, should use root.
A lot of "user applications" do not work with root.
And you make your OS vulnerable with unnecessary root commands.

# 10 :
Looks OK. Files are identical to the content of 'xgraph-12.1-7pclos2011.i586.rpm'.

# 12 : Yes. You can try with a reinstall :

# rpm -Uvh --force xgraph-12.1-7pclos2011.i586.rpm

Looks OK.
Except that the "opensuse.repo" and "rpmfusion.repo" are not valid any more.
You can delete those. Or move them to /etc/yum.repos.d/<backup>/.

Besides that : None of the mentioned packages have anything to do with the package
xgraph-12.1-7pclos2011.i586.rpm
