installation problem
 

am having a hard time installin any software i download, its either sayin permission not granted or unable to convert wen i try to unpack it

At least you should let us know, which distribution you are using, and maybe what you want to install.

Software installed system-wide needs root permissions.
If you can't unpack it - you may have downloaded just the binary.
That's all the guessing I can do at this point.

The reason the information above is needed is because on Linux, you usually download from repositories specific to the distribution and they are different and use different package managers. That way, you don't have to search all over the internet for a program.
