Installation of Xerox Phaser 3116 Driver in Suse 9.3
 

hi guys!!! our office just migrate to suse 9.3 a week ago and we are experiencing problems in installing our printers, one of which is a Xerox Phaser 3116. before i bought this printer, i check the its website to see if its linux compatible and it is. i've tried installing the driver using the support cd via gui and terminal. both were successful. however, when i ran the configuration tool, there seems to be a problem when i am adding the said printer. it was asking for a password before i could continue. what i did is i check to options and a window popped up.

user: root
password: _________
locathost: 631 (from my recollection)
(i forgot the details of this line)

i assume that the password was identical with my root password so i just type it and close the said window. then i click the "add printer" button and type the password earlier. but a window popped up with a message saying "authentication failed". as i have mentioned earlier, i tried installing the setup.sh in gui. when it showed the "authentication failed" message, i re-installed suse 9.3 and tried installing setup.sh on the terminal. the same message still appeared.

my question is: did i miss something? i can't figure it out. i tried using a guide (from ubuntu website - installing Xerox Phaser 3116) to no avail. :cry:

the cups password is'not' the same as the root password. cups keeps a separate list of users.

lppasswd -a username to add a user

use yast instead, much easier

maybe this could help, i am running suse 9.3 at its gnome interface, not kde. the person who installed our network advised us to use this because some of our computers cannot accomodate the kde interface.

yast is not a kde application. you can run it from any desktop or from the command line. start yast , select harware,then printer. follow the prompts to install the printer.

or use the cups interface after adding a user with lppasswd -a username

After installing, opened the options menu and i found these

sorry for the trouble. i had search the xerox site but they don't even have some kind of documentation with regard to the installation in a linux environment. i really appreciate that you are taking the time answering this. :)

yeah the localhost:631 thing is the cups web config pages. an as i said it keeps it's own list of users/passwords. you'll have to add a user before you can access the config pages.

i have two 2 accounts in my pc. 1 is the root and the other is the user (which is me). can i just add your advice: "use the cups interface after adding a user with lppasswd -a username" with my current username?
