Installation of redhat7.3
 

Am trying to install Redhat7.3 for the downloaded iso images.

Have run the md5sum which gives no errors, the iso files are mountable & all the contents are visible.


However when specifying the path of the iso images the installation exits with the following message.


"Error mounting /dev/loop1 on /mnt/runtime (Invalid argument). This shouldn't happen and I'm rebooting your system now."

Somebody pls help.

yes have tried to mount the iso's. am able to mount the iso's.
only when using them for an installation am having a problem.
Have even burnt the iso's on to cd's but when the installation starts it dows not reconize the same

I was totally new to Linux, and so I had spent the last 190 of 240 hrs hitting the PC with a few distributions (ELX, SuSE, Mandrake and Redhat) which I downloaded via a broadband connection on Windows XP platform.

Many failures, many HOW-Tos and many hours of zombieNESS, I have now got Redhat 7.3 on one of my several HDD partitions. I am still lost within the X-windows environment after having being conditioned under Microsoft environment, even worse on the command prompt.

I came here so that I could find out what others experienced on trying Linux. I am still figuring how to get KDE 3.0 to work with my 3com network card + LAN connection. Never mind that, I'll browse around for something.

Now, sorry for the long story, let me share what I have done to get Redhat 7.3 installed.

I downloaded all 5 ISOs from one of the sites but I did not want to burn them onto CDs because I wanted to try other alternatives. [Tried having all of SuSE 8.0 installation files (over 6 GB) on my hard drive (SuSE 8.0 does not have ISOs downloadable as yet since it is still new) but couldn't take it beyong the package selection when the YaST GUI installer couldn't mount the partition where the files were, so installation halted...again and again.]

Where was I?

Ok, create an installation floppy disk from the image file (boot.imq) downloaded from http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/.../i386/images/.

Make sure you have FREE SPACE (non-formated partition) on your drive. Just remember the path to the directory where you have the Redhat 7.3 ISOs and then boot up with the installation disk. The rest is history.

You could even install from the CD ISOs even if your computer does not boot from the CDRom. The floppy boot disk has the options for you when you're booted in.

Have tried to do that. Have downloaded the boot.img file & created the required boot floopy. The floopy boots to the installation & when I specify the path of the 3 iso files it either refuses to proceed, giving the mentioned error.

I dont think it is a problem with the iso files as i have redownloaded the files.

Pls help urgently as i require to complete the installation of Redhat 7.3.

Hi Nigel, assuming that you have used MD5SUM.exe to verify the integrity of your ISOs, the next thing I could think of was your partition table.

You need to know exactly which partition you're directing the installer, usually from one HDD, they might be hda1, hda2, etc. I found that the Redhat installer was not very clever (or limitations in capability??) in that it could not allow browsing from within different hda(s) so that I could select and point to the directory of the ISOs.

So in this case, you've got to be precise. Pick the right hda or hdb (if 2nd HDD) and input the path of the directory beginning with: /abc (folder name) /abcd/abcde. You only need to point to the folder which contains the ISOs and not the filename itself. The installer will take it from there.

One more thing. The boot installer was very particular when it came to HDD partitioning integrity. I had a messed up partition table after trying different distribution installations, and because of that the Redhat boot installer just wouldn't go further. I had then made a mistake after taking the misrepresented partition table info that one of my partition managers provided. The result?
I blew away 90% of data on my 80GB HDD. Thank goodness I had most of the essential data backed up on CDs. I had to reinstall almost everything back on a gain. SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL when it comes to partition table. DON'T ALWAYS TRUST what the partition table tells you. Verify as much as possible with whatever tools you may have.

If the above doesn't work again, then perhaps to go on further you may need to post a detailed process of what you have done leading to the failure stage. I am sure more experienced people here will help you what when they know the details.

Hi,

Tried the same. Cleaned the entire partitions table & started from bottom up.
Still the same.

Am getiing the feeling that RH 7.3 is not for me & i need to stick to RH 7.2 which work perfectly on the same hardware.

Could this be an issue with the hardware. I am using an HP Kayak workstation. 333MHz, 512MB RAM. Seagate 20Gb & Seagate 40 GB HDD The 20GB hda drive is formatted as (hda1)4GB / partitions & the rest is free,which i hope to format after am successful with the installtion. the iso files are on the second drive which is connected as the slave hdb(1).


some how the installation manages to exit at the stage of picking up the images.

Beats me this time, Nigel. I am so new to Linux myself and what I could do was only to share with you what I did to get Redhat 7.3 installed. I am still figuring out how to get it to use my printer Canon S400Sp, scroll with my wheel mouse and boot from my Windows XP boot screen.

That was as far as I could take you, Nigel. Perhaps you may wish to continue with 7.2, but if you were as determined as I am, keep banging at it and I'm sure you'll figure it all out. That, to me is more fulfilling.

Please let me know how you are progressing if it is not a bother, since I am learning at the early stages myself.

Man with the stuff im trying to do to get this installation working i could get a 100 machimes on RH 7.2.

Makes me think is there someting wrong with the os.

hey am downloading the entire iso set again. but with the type of connection & speed i get,,,,, will be starting off the installation again in mostly a month.

Don't even know if i will remember if it still exist.

Did you say one month? I suggest you pay a few dollars to someone who could do it in a few hours for you. I DL 5 of the ISOs for 7.3 @ 1 hr each, and twice for those because the first lot was wiped out by my error partitioning exercise, if you'd remember my mentioning earlier.

Or wait a month and perhaps see a friendlier Redhat 7.4 and etc appearing. I have not tried RH before so if 7.2 has been good for you, perhaps you want to hang on to it for a little while more.

For now, I've got the wheel mouse going but not the Canon S400Sp printer. Still probing...and looking at Wine at the same time.

Having a faster connection did change my way of working on the computer.

Be patient...don't even bother getting agitated with something like this. It is all within the learning process, isn't it?

Lo & behold it works.
have managed to upgrade my system & everything with it. Even the too troublesome oracle works fine with it.
Have just started with what i would call a little of my own research on the same, will let u'll guys know .

Okay, I am also new to Linux and have downloaded the 3 ISO's the Redhat had on their site. First question is do I need the other 2 (I believe they were RPM's)? Second question, does the partioner in 7.3 work fairly easily and well or should I partion before I attempt to install?

What you really need is only the first cd. The other have extra packages.
The partitioner works good, you can do all partitioning using it. Of course, be careful what you're doing (as every time partitioning).
