Does the file configure have executable permission? Have you checked that?

Does it must be 6.0.1? I believe your running Ubuntu, if yes, you could use synaptic and type in the filter "GNU chess",
the version 5.07-7 is available in the repositories. Have you tried xboard? It is one very good version of chess, very strong, with clock and all kinds of customization.

Regards

Did you try to use synaptic? It is the program that manages the packages you want to install, it also install the dependencies for you.

The current version in the repositories is: 5.07-7

where did you save the folder for chess 6.0.1 ?

seeing a "Permission denied" from this command is odd

Code:
cd /to/the/location/of/the/folder
./configure --help
/* read the options and set the ones you want to change */
./configure --prefix=/usr
assuming you want it installed to /usr and not /usr/local

also you are aware that gnu chess is a terminal text ( ascii) program .There is no gui
