Installation issues with Opera and Gaim

I'm having some difficulties with the installations of Opera 7.21 and Gaim 0.72. Opera reports:

/usr/lib/opera/7.21-20031013.2/opera: error while loading shared libraries: libqt.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

when I try to launch it from xterm. But libqt.so.3 does exist at /usr/local/qt/lib/libqt.so.3. So, is Opera looking in the wrong place? How to I tell it where to look? Which leads me to another question: Whats the difference between /usr, /usr/local, and /usr/X11R6? They each have their own /shared and /bin and /man directories. I have noticed that Vector install all X apps in the /usr/X11R6 folder, and non-X apps to the /usr folder, but what is the /usr/local directory for then? Why is it the default folder for installation? Could this have something to do with my problem; although I did just install Opera and QT to the default, which is /usr/local.

As for Gaim, it said that I needed GLib 2.0 or higher, so I went and downloaded and installed GLib 2.2.3, but Gaim ./configure still says it can't find GLib. More exactly, it says that it may be installed incorrectly. The first time I installed GLib, I forgot the "rm -rf /install-prefix/include/glib.h /install-prefix/include/gmodule.h" command before "make install". I just did the rm command then make install again, but same problem...did I fsck it up?

Thanks a lot .
