Unhappy Installation help, getting closer with specific problem

I've been trying to install redhat linux 8.0 on a p2b-ve motherboard (HP Pavilion) based computer which I've pieced together. I have one IDE QUANTUM 4.3 ATA hardrive on as IDE master and a LG 52X Cdrom slave. I've all but given up hope using the CD install (too many unknowns, bad burns, low quality CDRs, etc) and am trying to install using a USB harddrive with the ISO images in /redhat/

at the boot prompt I am typing:

linux text mem=exactmap mem=640k@0 mem=243M@1M

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/31594
(the link above is a description of the problems I was having before this, the kernal panic message that is...)

and I am able to boot using the floppy disk and get to the "choose a language" screen (gone are the days of 'redneck' as a language). I'm not successful in installing because i get the following messages:

error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic
error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic
error 2 reading header: cpio: Bad magic
...
Running anaconda, the Red Hat Linux system installer -- please wait...

then...

install exited abnormally -- received signal 11
sending termination signals ... done

and down she goes.

Any help with this would be appreciated! Does anybody know if this is a bios problem? I've done check sums on the ISO images and they are correct. I'm almost convinced that this is a motherboard/bios problem or a boot prompt issue. Any suggestions? I don't want to loose the 450Mhz, 256MB system I've pieced together. If I can get past the install on this one, I have great plans for it!

have you tried redownloading the iso's? if that doesn't help, i'd recommend burning them to cd. i had a pavilion 6736 with a celeron 667 MHz and the usb ports were screwed up. by the time i realized the warantay was up

I burned the CDs (reluctantly) and posted my results here....

still a perplexing work in progress. I'm not quite sure how to proceed from this point. I've never "swapped brains" on a linux box before.
