installation help

Hi,

Can you guys please help me with this. I have 2 questions.

1st:
I am kinda confused about the part where it asks you to input the "hostname" for the server

http://www.labtestproject.com/files/...hostname_b.png

My question is can I use any hostname like, whatever.iwant.com? or do I need a specific hostname?

2nd question:
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/5922/fed.jpg

In the field where it asks for the ip address which ip address do I enter? the wide area network ip or the local area network ip that starts with 192.168.0.1? also its asking for the nameserver where do i find the nameserver ip? i went to cmd ipconfig /all but I cant find anything thats states "Nameserver"

I would appreciate if you guys could help

1. Well, it depends, but you can PROBABLY use whatever you want. You don't say if you're installing this at home, or in an office/corporate environment, though. If it's your house, pick whatever you want. If it's the office, check with your network administrator, and they can tell you.

2. Again, it depends. If you're at home, using a home-networking device like a linksys/dlink router, you can probably select "use DHCP", and not input an address, as it will get one automatically, along with the nameserver, default route, etc. Office/corporate - again, see network administrator.

I want use the fedora machine as a server from home. Its mainly for server use. To the hostname part if i enter whatever I want would all the people from the world will be able to see it? I got a hostname from no-ip.com, is that the hostname I need? or just about anything? as for the ip address part dont you think its best if I need manually input all those address to use it as a server rather than dhcp?

The host name will be assigned to the computer, the name that everybody will see is the one you register from no-ip.com

Of course Static IPs are preferred for servers than Dynamic IPs from DHCP so that they will not change and cause any trouble afterwards

PS: Next time please write a more descriptive title for your thread and I assure you, you won't regret it.

what kind of server you are setting up?

I tried dyndns.com once and it did not need a lot of work there was a DDNS section in my router's configuration (take a look maybe it will save you some effort)

I think this link will have all the instructions you need:
http://www.no-ip.com/support/guides/...te_client.html

and I also found this video: (I did not watch it)

Good Luck
